Journal #2: Heroism

Traditionally speaking, what does it mean to be a hero? (In other words, how is the word broadly defined by history and/or society.) How is this similar or different from your personal definition of the word? Who are some people who are, in your opinion, truly deserving of the title? Discuss what makes their actions heroic, as opposed to just admirable.

Write your responses in the comments below. It should be no fewer than seven sentences in length, and your best example of formal writing.

Hero is a hard title to get. In history people like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are considered heroes, and look at all the of the accomplishments they have made in their lifetime. My personal definition is when a person does something that takes it far beyond imaginable. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln do deserve the word hero because of their good actions, and without them America wouldn't be what it is today. Another person who i believe should be called a hero is my mother. She raised five kids all by herself and never gave up, and i know she never will. So i guess all in all, hard work that takes everything to the next level, where many people tend not to venture, and make changes in lives would be considered heroic.

To me a hero is someone who has impacted someone's life or even history, someone who has made a difference for the good of other's. Someone who really sticks out as a hero in history to me, is Abraham Lincoln. By him setting the African Americans free from slavery, he really influenced how things are today, between blacks and whites. Without his actions to setting the slaves free America would be a completely different place today. A person in my life that i consider a hero is my mom. She's raised me and my three brothers. She's always been there to run us to practices, last minute store runs, to a friends house, or wherever we needed to go. My mom has always been there when i need someone to talk to, or when i just need a hug. To me she gives the best advice anyone could ever recieve. I also consider fire fighters heros, they put their live's on the line every day they go to work, for people they don't even know too. For many people heros are the people we see in movies with capes, and they save the world, but the truth is there are heros everywhere we look. We just have to take the time to see them.

A hero is someone who you look up to. It's someone who is willing to stand out, be brave and take risks to get the job done; the job that no one else was willing to do. When i think about the definition of a hero i often think of Benjamin Franklin. He is often called the first civilized man in America and i think it takes a lot to do all the amazing things he did such as taking risks politically and scientifically. He also impacted our country with his impressive literature and without him who knows where we all would be right now. However, there are also heros within my own home; heros like my parents. They have been there for me no matter what stupid things i've attempted or said and they have taught me so much about life which ultimately shapes my personality which will hopefully help shape the world. I also think of all the men in women in the army who put their lives on the line for our country and often don't get much credit for it. I believe we need more people like these, because if we did our world would be a much better place to live.

To me a hero is somebody that you can look up to as a role model. They do things you wish you could; they act the way you want to act; and they impact you life enough to make you know that they are who you inspire to be. Also in history you could say a hero was somebody that made a difference in society in a way that influenced other people to be like them, or put them in history books because they did something big in life. Some exaples would be like Albert Einstein with the invention of electricy. I bet many people now a days look to him for insiration because he is their hero. To many people though family members may be considered a hero to them. Like my mom for instance, is always their for me and works for her own living instead of relying on others for help. I beleive that she is my hero because she has done so much to make me who I am today, and to me that means a lot. Many other people in our community's give up their time to help others like doctor's, teahers, and firefighters. They all do all they can to make their indent in society. In all, I beleive that is what makes a person a hero.

My definition of a hero is someone who will go above and beyond what is expected of them daily. They impact others lives in a positive way and they themselves are happy with what they have become. In history, heroes were people who were famous enough for the textbooks. People like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. were some in American history. Of course, we have are own heroes, too. I think my mom should be called a hero. She has always been there for me, no matter what I had to say. She also would always give me second chances, and brought me up to be who I am today. Also, people who we never really think about, but who put their lives on the line and save others every single day to make our world a better place. People like firefighters, police officers, doctors and US soldiers fighting in the Middle East. These people are true heroes, but a person doesn't have to save someone's life to be a hero themselves. Anyone that can change a person's life in some way is someone I consider a hero.

I do not believe in giving someone the label of a hero. People may think others are heroic by their actions, but their actions and examples are just who they are. The considered heros are normal people, but they are not afraid to show their uniqeness, and are not afraid to step up, be a leader, and show what they truly believe in. For example, Adolf Hitler. The German people looked up, and viewed Hitler as a hero. They thought he was a god sent to help unite Germany, and lead Germany to exceptional power. However, others in the world thought he was a menace, and he needed to be eliminated from the world. Another example would be Rosa Parks. She was not trying to be heroic, she just stood up for her beliefs. People everyday stand up for their beliefs, but they do not get called heros. As you can see, a hero is just a label, it is the person's actions that define them, and make them stand out from the others. This is why I do not believe that people can obtain the title of a hero.

I think that a hero is someone that has done great things and has the ability to change peoples lives for the better. There are many different kinds of heroes because a hero is something different to everyone. To me a hero is a strong, capable, friendly, caring person who wants to make a difference. not all heroes win their battles, but they give everything they have. There are many heroes in history that aren't even mentioned or viewed as heroes. Heroes are people you can look up to as a role model. Of all the different ways that heroes are described, they are all important to people, and can influence peoples lives.

A hero is someone you look up to from a higher position and did something important. My definition is the same with higher position and important used loosly. I know a couple of people but it is personal preference. My hero would be my dad, he is now a Navy Chief and is involved in volunteering with the boyscouts. Hopefully I can live up to that and be as great.

A hero, the Webster's definition for it is a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. But to me I think it is some much more than that. A hero is someone that you truly believe in and look up to. Someone that lives up to thier own, and other people's expectations and pushes themselves to be the best they can be. Honestly though I think a hero means something a little different to everyone. For some people its a pro athlete, coach, their parents, older sibling or a fire fighter. Heros all have something in common, character. People I look up to have different qualitites that I aspire to have in my life. Like leadership, kindness, compassion, and being a strong person mentally, and emotionally. That is why people view different people as heros, that all have different qualities. Its important to keep in mind that heros are not always someone you see in the media or are the center of attention. Its just someone who wants to make a difference. So really, its up to you to write your own definition for a hero.

In the past, a hero has been described as doing great things that change history. I don’t think somebody necessarily has to change the lives of everyone on Earth. I believe that true heroism is when an individual sacrifices something for the good of other’s. In my opinion, people like Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. are real heroes. And then there’s the everyday hero’s, the ones that you don’t necessarily hear about. People like firefighters, police officers, and military personnel. Anybody could be a hero if they do something that changes another’s life for the better.

"Traditionaly" a hero is someone who has a lot of courage and incredible ability, and they are greatly admired for their deeds. However, in my opinion, you don't have to have incredible abilities to be considered a hero is someone you can look up to, learn from, and does things that go above and beyond the imaginable and change things for the better. People in history like George Washington are considered heroes because they shaped our country and made it what it is today. They did things that changed people, and life as we know it. This is what makes their actions heroic, the fact that it has more of an effect on people than something that is just admirable.

Then there is the everyday hero like a mom, a dad, any family member or maybe a friend. Rose Parks stood up for what is right that day on the bus. She caused people to take a stand and speak out against what is right and what is wrong. An everyday hero that comes to mind is my mom. She is always there for me she know how to not only be a mom but also a friend. She’s there to take us to our practices, make dinner, cloth us and anything else we may need. Heroes are all around us, we just need to take time to give credit to those who help us through our lives.

A hero can be described in many different ways. My definition of hero is a person who you really look up to, that has done their very best to be the best person they can possibly be. There are many people in our history that have been considered heroes. A few people who really stand out in my mind are Abraham Lincoln, Albert Enstine, and Benjamin Franklin. These people are heroes because they helped shape the world we live in today. Lincoln freed the slaves; Enstine created electricity, and Franklin wrote literature and created inventions. Another person that deserves the title of hero in my mind are my parents. They have raised me to be the best person I can be, and they have and always are there for me when I need help. Other people I believe are heroes and firefighters, cops, and the people in the army. They risk their life everyday for every single person in this world. They are always there to protect us when we are in need. I know when most people hear the word hero, they automatically think, Batman, Spiderman, and all of the other superheroes we love to watch in movies, but if you really think about it, heroes are surrounding you everyday.

Hero can be defined in many different ways. There can be war hero's, there can be city heroes then can also be everyday heroes such as your Mom and or Dad. War heros are people that helped change the war for the better. they couldve stopped a battle, won a battle or helped out a commrad in need such as George Washington and John Mccain. City heroes i would say would be the policeman and firefighters. These men and women are out doing their jobs and more everyday to make our lives a better and safer place. Whenever theirs a fire their theyre to help. when theyres a car crash they will be there. Mom and dads can be heroes too. Even by just helping you will somehting as simple as homework. A hero can be anyone u think deserves the title. My definition of a hero is a human who goes out of their way to make things better. No one needs to win a Noble prize to become a hero. Anyone can become a hero when they want to be

Traditionally, i think most people think of a hero as some stereotypical shining knight on a horseback who must save a fair maiden at the top of some tower. I hate stereotypes. A hero to me is someone who takes a risk for the benefit of others. They are the people who allow themselves to become vulnerable in order to assist others. In my opinion, the people who deserve the title of hero are the people who have or are serving in wars. Theses people have made the ultimate risk of putting their lives in danger to protect our rights and out well being. I also believe that anyone who has died serving in the military deserves the title of hero because they have given up their lives to protect ours and that sacrifice is so great that if would be insulting to call them anything but heroes.

George Washington, a hero or a regular person? In history and society today, a hero is defined as someone who has courage to risk something and who has the respect from the citizens. The definition in history of a hero is similar to mine. A hero to me is a person that you can look up to, some one that you want to be like when you get bigger. Someone who is always there for you when times get hard; to help you when you fall, and risk everything for you. People who are heroes are the firefighters and police officers who risk their lives every day to help people, especially on 9/11 when the towers fell. Parents and family members, but also friends can be heroes, because they are always there for you no matter what, they will do anything for you. Even everyday regular people that you have never met are heroes, because they are willing to risk their lives to help others. Heroes are important in today’s society, we need more of them, but the difference between a citizen and a hero is that a hero would go beyond what their duties are and help others. That is important.

Anyone can be a hero, a hero is someone who puts great effort into what they do and makes someone proud. It can be someone you can look up to, helps you with something, or just someone who works really hard. There have been heroes in history, and just normal life. I believe that my grandma is one of the biggest heroes Ive seen because she takes care of so many people and puts so much effort into everything she does and makes so many people proud. But i also believe people like George Washington and Albert Einstein are heroes for doing the things they did for our country and inventing new things. Basically, a hero is anyone you believe to be and is a hero in your perspective.

To be a hero, in our society means; to give your life for another or others. Like the soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq are doing to this day. It's not at all different form my own opinion, when I hear the word hero, the war over seas is something that comes up to my mind, right away.
However, there are everyday heroes like police officers and firemen; never knowing whether they'll come home again, because of a life or even lives, they've sacrificed themselves for.
A hero can also be someone who encourages you to follow your dreams or rise above negative aspects of your life. Everyday people like moms, dads, teachers, coaches, etc. Anybody can be a hero to someone, it's finding one that's the hard part.

To be a hero, you must be willing to take on a large amount of responsibility. Many people may look to you as a source of inspiration. And you have to be willing to provide just that. When the word hero comes to mind, some might automatically think of the cliched "superheroes." Ones such as superman, batman, the crimson chin. Personally to me, those do not fall under the category hero. The ones i do believe to be heroes are the people who never give up. Those who always reach above and beyond expected. Individuals such as those can achieve heroic impacts on this world.

Heroism can be interpreted in many ways depending on your values and morals. Many believe that a hero is someone who is thought of as a role model and a do-gooder. I see a hero as someone who does extraordinary tasks in their every day life. There is a fine line between admirable and heroic though. Admiring someone is only to acknowledge that they have done good work, saying that someone is a hero shows that the person or persons you are talking about have influenced and or helped change your life in some way. To be deemed with the title of hero can be a great accomplishment. To me a soldier that has had to leave their home and travel to the middle east to fight for the freedom of another country, so we can stay safe is defiantly deemed a hero. Rosa Parks and martin Luther King Jr., also come to my mind when heroism is thought of. These two people have showed that the courage to stand up for what you believe in can change the society and others views for what is right. For a task so small as sitting in the front of a bus could not be thought of as heroic today , but the courage that Parks showed that day to defy the silly laws of the racial world so many years ago changed that. There are many heroes that are being made today. The people who stand up to society and the people who fight for what they believe in. There are heroes all over you just need to take the time to pick them out from the rest of the world.

The actaul definition of a hero is a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. But to me, a hero is someone that you can look up to in many ways. They live the life you want to live, and they are the person that you want to grow up to be. If I compared the my definition to the actual difination, the are pretty different. One is about being brave and having distinguished courage and the other is about just being the kind of person someone else looks up too. But the difinitions are also the same because the both most likely will have noble qualities and both would most likely be good people. In my opinion there are a lot of true heros in the world. Many of them, just everyday normal people. I would say that everyone who believers in the right things and wants to be a good person is a hero to someone out there. so in my head, everyone is a hero in their very own way. One example of a perosn i think is a hero is my cousin. She goes to church three times a weel, she has a huge heart, she is always helping others people, she does a lot of volunteer work and she is nice almost 99% of the time. That is such a good life to live and that right there is a hero.

To be hero, one must be willing to sacrifice anything and everything for the sake of others. Those that have been marked by history, such as George Washington, have been willing to sacrifice themselves to defend that which they love. This is just like my own personal definition of hero, someone who cares more about others then themselves and are willing to do anything to protect those that they love. Also though, the love doesn't have to be as big as dying for an entire nation, but simply standing up for family or friends. Those who I consider very worthy of the title hero are King Leonidas (of the 300 Spartans) and Jesus Christ. King Leonidas, instead of being cowardly, led the 300 Spartans towards an army thousands of times bigger then the Spartan group, leading to the death of all of the Spartans. King Leonidas though led these 300 Spartans so that Sparta would have time to rienforce themselves before the enemy army arrivied, King Leonidas dies for his city and his people. Jesus Christ also died fo those he loved, everyone. He beared the pain and suffering of millions of people, and lost his life so that those people would have a place in Heaven. He rose from death though, meaning he was not only a hero for giving his life but also for regaining it.

I believe that a hero is someone who has done something for the good of others or is like a role model for others. Also a hero is a person who fights for what they believe is write. Most of the people we learn about in history are heros such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and every one who fought for this country to make it what it is today. George Washington is a hero because he fought for our countries independence and also became the first president. Abraham Lincoln is considered a hero due to him abolishing slavery creating and creating equal rights for all American born men. Then Martin Luther King fought equal rights for everyone that is a citizen of the U.S. Some more modern examples are members of the military fighting in Iraq and for some people its actors and actresses. Heros always will play a big role in our society and always have so you will always see some form of a hero in your life.

To be a traditional hero you would have to be super in some way do an extraordinary thing that no cmmon man could do. This way people had something to look up to and they new it was a great honor. Nowadays to be considered a hero is not such an unatainable goal and is realy used for anybody that is looked up to, many pro atheletes are childrfens heros because at that age that is what they aspire to be. In my opinion to be a hero you have to do something that takes courage and strength during a time of distress. the people who were on flight 96 and stopped the terrorists are heroes to me even though they died they did it to save others.

a hero is someone that does good things for others. people who has made a difference in history or in another persons life.this differs from my own definition by that i believe a hero is a person whom you can look up and want to be like.a person who i believe that deserves this title is Franklin D. Roosevelt. He took our country through the great depression and gave the nation hope. he dealt with the nations economic problems while in a wheelchair. he is a hero apposed to just admirable is he brought the country form almost everyone not having a job and homeless to the economy back to normal and basically starting new with our nation.

I think that everybody would define a hero as somebody you look up to. My personal definition of a hero is somebody that sets a good example for others. Also a hero is a person who works really hard to achieve a goal. I have many heroes in my life. The most important would be my dad. My dad works so hard for my family and myself. Which many people would classify as admirable. But my dad also has two jobs. He works at Chrysler during the midnight shift. Also he has his own heating and cooling business, which he does during the day. So he barely gets 4 hours of sleep a day, and if that wasn’t enough, he still finds time to have fun with his family. So I defiantly believe he is a hero and not just admirable. Another hero in my life is my church leader Paul. He has taught me so much and has really made an impact on my life. Not only does he teach myself and others great things, but he spends so much time getting to know everybody. He spends many additional hours at the church when he doesn’t have to. He just does it to help others. Heroes do things for other people without being asked and I believe my dad and Paul are great examples of just that.

Heroism is defined differently from person to person. A hero may be a saver, a leader, or a helper. A hero may do something extraordinary or honorable. In society, when one hears a hero, they think Superman or Batman. But, these fictional characters are supplied with super powers. Superheroes and everyday heroes have something in common. They risk themselves in order to do something great for someone or for many people. Everyday heroes live each day by risk their names, risk their jobs, risk their lives to putting others in front of themselves. A hero could be a fireman, a police officer, a soldier, a parent, a teacher, a friend. A hero could be anyone anywhere, according to whoever is looking to find one.

A hero is someone whose actions are positive and they are looked up to. They can be looked up to by 1 person or a whole country as long as they’re recognized for their heroic actions. Now a days police officers, fire fighters, and doctors are considered to be heroes for their heroic acts of saving others lives. To me a hero is someone who risks his or her life to save someone else’s. Different people have different perspectives of what it means to be a hero.

Heroism

Hero defined is a figure in mythology and legend renowned for great strength, courage and daring. Heroism is obtained when someone commits their lifetime to a specific cause, or action. The label “hero” cannot b obtained through on single action, it takes a series of dedicated events to be labeled a “hero.” Some hero’s in history include Ben Franklin, renowned for his dedication and perseverance toward the thirteen colonies, an additional example, is Martin Luther King Junior, he sacrificed his life for the cause of equal treatment for all minorities. On the other hand, a hero is someone who you look up to and sacrifices themselves for the good of others or a team. Another great example of a hero is the great Detroit Red Wing, Steve Yzerman. Yzerman was drafted by the Red Wings in 1983 and became captain at age twenty-one prior to the 1986 season he served as captain for twenty-one years when he retired on January 2, 2007. Steve was famous for his leadership by example and also his modesty, even saying things such as “I don't know that I'd agree I was our best player…as for the team, I always tried to do the right thing.” Great role models such as Ben Franklin, Martin Luther King Junior, and Steve Yzerman are the epitomes of hero’s, for his life long commitment to a dear clause and also for demonstrating their heroism over a lifetime.

Heroes are described in many different ways. Some have super powers like Spiderman, and Superman (only in movies). Others are every day people who just do the right thing. To me a hero is a clever, kind, and capable person who will make a difference for the common good. My heroes are my parents because they have cared and provided for me since birth. If you think about it we are all surrounded by heroes everyday but some may not notice it. There are many different kinds of heroes because a hero is something different to each and every one of us.

To be a hero it is very hard. The definition of hero in history and in society can be different but are very similar. A hero in history would be someone that did something no one else has done before, since it was a forming country their were lots of heros. Such as, George Washington, William Pitt, and Abraham Lincoln. Their are a lot more people considered heros back in history those are just a few to name them. They helped form what is society today. They stood up for us and helped us gain independence. In society today a hero is someone that goes beyond what is expected, does things remarkable, or changes someones life in one way or another. For example, my parents are heros, they have raised three children and are still in the process of it. They raised us well, and helped us have a good life. They will not give up on us no matter how many flaws we may have. People that have volunteered there time for the good of others in the community are also heros. They help change someones lifes without thinking about theirs. All in all, people that surpass the expectations, and do things willingly without even thinking about themselves first are considered heros in my eyes.

A hero, traditionally, would be a person to give themselves away for another person or take responsibility on something that will help to society or others in a substantial way. This is similar to what I believe is a hero. Heroes help those in need and dedicate themselves to others. A hero that would fit that particular description would have to be Martin Luther King Jr. He didn’t have to stand up for all the African Americans in the United States, but he did. Now, the United States is the way it is today with not the same range of racial issues we once used to have. Although, not only people in history, I would call heroic, there are people I am very close to that I could call a hero. My Grandma Jackie would be one of those people, she would do anything for her family and even on those days that she can barley stand she will still help a person in need. She is a dedicated person and is not only a role model to me, but an amazing grandma and a hero in my eyes.

She goes above and beyond to make the people that she cares about feel loved, and I know that she would do anything for them. There are people just like my grandma every where. Though they aren't in capes and costumes, they are willing to do anything for anyone who needs them, and have a positive impact on the world around them. We just have to take the time to see them.

To me a hero is somebody that I look up to. In all the movies you may see these heros that do all these spectacular things, like save people from fires, save money from some robbers, or even save whole cities. But to me a hero doesnt have to be that spectacular at all. For example, a hero that i look up to is my older brother. Just for the fact that he does great in football, and he does great in school, and many people have respect for him. I want to be like my brother when I grow older, and he is my role model, thats what i believe a hero is.

Traditionally a hero is someone who is recognized for doing something courageous. Risking ones life for another is the popular opinion of a hero. I believe true heros are not recognized, they receive no metals, or publicity a true hero is an unspoken hero. A hero is someone people look up to, simply for being a good person, not necessarily because they leaped into a burning house to save someone (although it is extremely courageous and noble). Throughout history heros are ones who sacrifice themselves for the benefit of society, or just for the benefit of a single person. a hero can be in any form, he/she can be anyone for any reason.

To me, a hero is someone who has the guts to do what is necessary, not what is good or even right. A hero must be able to make decisions that will be second-guessed, questioned, and hated by others. Because of this, true heros are seldom, if ever, recognized during their lifetimes. Sometimes, the concequences of the choices a hero makes will not be fully appreciated by those affected. The ability to push through and continue with the necessary work is what makes someone a hero, not the visible good that is accomplished instantly.

Heroes are people that act not caring about themselves but those around them. Heroes are only those that don't really try to be one and are just acting out of the will to help others. Like Micheal said a lot of Heroes are not recognized in their lifetime or they are not recognized at all because they make unpopular choices. Many of those that think they are Heroes during their lifetime let it go to their head and no longer act for others but to keep themselves in the spotlight. Not many people deserve the word hero, of the few I am able to think of many have died for their actions such as the fire fighters in 9/11.
