To better prepare for Monday's test on The Crucible, it would be wise to spend some time brainstorming themes from the play. In the comments below, list one or two major themes from the play. Additionally, you should brainstorm specific support from the play that points to this being a theme. Consider what various characters said (dialogue) and did (actions) that prove your thematic statement is an appropriate one.
Remember, your test on scheduled for Monday, September 15th, and you will be able to use your reader's response entries.

While reading through "The Crucible," I noticed a few themes. First, I noticed reputaion was an extremely important theme. In Salem, the towns people feared sin as they themselves did not want to be associated with it, or involved with other sinful people. They were afraid it would hinder their good names. For example, Parris was worried about Abigail's reputation of being a witch, because it could force him out of his job as the minister. Another example is with John Proctor. Procotor would not sign his confession becuase he wanted his good name. The other theme I noticed was Hysteria; when the outburst of fear about witchcraft arose. For example, Abigail accused Elizabeth Poroctor of witchcraft, which helped contribute a lot of fear about that subject. Another example would be Tomas Putnum. Putnum managed to obtain revenge on Francis nurse by getting Rebecca, who was accused of murdering Ann Putnum's babies. Hysteria spread throughout Salem, due to either jealousy, or grudges against others.
what victoria said. =) Really though, she stole my idea.
Victoria said a lot of what I was thinking except another theme I saw was revenge. When people were brought into court for their trial for supposedly being a witch, a person had to put them their name down as being a witch. Then the people that were put into court put someone elses name down just for revenge of being put in court in the first place. This is what continuingly happened. For example, Abigail accused Elizabeth of witchcraft, then Abigail was put into court. That was the only other theme I noticed.
Upon reading "The Crucible" and my students comments on the play's theme I agree that reputation and revenge were important themes, but i also believe that another possible theme could be the Misjudgement, because if everyone in the play had better judgement of the girls and their riduculous story, perhaps it wouldn't have snowballed out of control.
Today, on the test, Ithought the theme of theoracy causing this entire mess was a true statement, because the courts where following the laws of the puritan religon rather than the laws passed by a leglislative governemnt, making their laws bias
When I read 'The Crucible', the main theme that I noticed was group psychology. People in the book who would not normally accused others, such as Mary, were so emboldened by the others that they did terrible things. Also, I dont think that any one person would have convicted all those people, but, because many people were involved in the trials, many people were punished.
The theme I noticed in "The Crucible", was deception. The four young girls decieved a whole community to gain temporary popularity. Others in the book were deceptive by accusing because they wanted more land, ect...
